Matthew Brailsford, (31), lives in Old Whittington with his wife of six years Samantha, and their giant dog. He has lived in Chesterfield his whole life apart from a two year spell in Australia installing Solar Panels, during which he gained the invaluable experience he needed for his career.
Custom Solar Ltd, based in the Dunston Innovation Centre works to design and install high quality Solar systems for businesses and homes. The company was formed in 2010 after Matthew returned from Australia, and currently employs 15 people from the Chesterfield area.
1 – What do you like best about living in Chesterfield and why?
I’ve always found Chesterfield to be one of the friendliest places in the world and it makes living and working here a real pleasure. I also love that we have the peak district on our doorstep and easy access to the rest of the Country.
2 – What are your favourite ways to spend your free time in Derbyshire?
We try to visit all parts of Derbyshire to eat out and socialise and we enjoy visiting Chesterfield Town Centre to purchase our food from other local businesses.
3 – Where is your favourite place to eat out locally and why?
We love a variety of places, Old Post in Chesterfield, Calabria in Chesterfield, Fox & Goose in Wigley.
4 – What are the positives about running a business here?
As we work nationwide on our commercial scale solar systems, having access to the transport links is priceless. I have always found the local business community to be incredibly supportive too and the Chesterfield Champion businesses definitely pull together.
5 – How do you see the future for Chesterfield and its small businesses?
I see the future of Chesterfield as incredibly bright, our unemployment levels have dropped to the lowest since 2008 and inward investment seems at an all-time high. The borough council has worked very hard to secure funding to continually drive the town forwards and we are playing our part in turning Chesterfield ‘Green’.
6 – If you had a magic wand, what one thing would you do to improve Chesterfield?
I would like to see more residents and businesses exploring their local area when evaluating activities to do and businesses to engage, everything we need is on our doorstep and I feel like we could benefit from a closer sense of community.
7 – What three words best sum up Chesterfield?
England’s Best Town!
