Associated British Ports – Southampton T5 Horizon Cruise Terminal

Project Overview

Associated British Ports – ABP is the UK’s leading port operator, with a unique network of 21 ports across England, Scotland, and Wales. ABP has a company-wide policy to deliver renewable technology across all operational ports to reduce CO2 emissions and energy consumption. Custom Solar, as a leading PV developer, was chosen by ABP, to complete this project. The project sought to further deliver on ABP policy and build on solar energy production at the Horizon Cruise Terminal in the Port of Southampton.

In 2021, Custom Solar in partnership with Associated British Ports completed an 871KWp (Kilowatts Peak) development in the Port of Southampton for the Horizon Cruise Terminal. This system will provide 855MWh (Megawatts hours) annually for the terminal which will aid in sustainably shore powering vessels passing through the port. The development will reduce carbon emissions by 154.75 tonnes annually with 2000 solar panels installed on-site. The systems across the terminal are monitored via our bespoke monitoring solution, full reactive maintenance, and annual scheduled service visits.

ABP’s Sustainable Development Manager, Sue Simmonite, said “From the outset of the design phase, we have been committed to ensuring our new Horizon Cruise Terminal embraces sustainability principles. Working with Custom Solar we have been able to maximise the amount of solar generation installed on the roof space of the design such that the terminal will be a net generator of renewable energy.”
