Jotun invest in Rooftop Solar PV to support sustainability ambitions

Overview of the challenge

Jotun operates in four segments: Decorative Paints, Marine Coatings, Protective Coatings, and Powder Coatings.

With ambitions of reaching 50% reduced carbon footprint and 70% renewable electricity by 2030, Jotun Paints chose us, Custom Solar, to design and deliver a rooftop Solar PV solution. In September 2023, we installed a 872kWp rooftop Solar PV system on the roof of Jotun Paints, Scunthorpe, which is predicted to reduce CO2 emissions by 361,855 kg per annum.

Our approach

This project was complex for our in-house design engineers as they wanted to use as much rooftop space as possible to maximise installed capacity, however, they were restricted by a large amount of skylights. Our specialised teams worked hard to maintain an exceptional H&S standard, avoiding the skylights and allowing us to utilise all the space available to create the largest system we could for Jotun.

Our teams also had to install a 900ml LV switchboard extension to connect the PV to Jotuns site. The installation also required a G100 export limitation device to restrict power going back to the grid.

Overall, Custom Solar completed yet another fantastic installation, on an active manufacturing site, and successfully helped another client move towards their Net Zero target.

The result

  • 872 kWp System size
  • 767,099.3 kWh Electricity generated
  • 361.8 tCO2 Emissions reduction
  • 1,730 Solar Panels
