Powering vessels at Southampton T5 Cruise Terminal

Overview of the challenge

Associated British Ports (ABP) is the UK’s leading port operator, with a unique network of 21 ports across England, Scotland, and Wales. ABP has a company-wide policy to deliver renewable technology across all their operational ports to reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption.

As part of their sustainability goals, they wanted to expand their solar energy production at the Horizon Cruise Terminal in the Port of Southampton.

Our approach

In partnership with Associated British Ports, we completed an 871KWp (kilowatts peak) installation of 2,000 solar panels that will provide 855MWh (megawatt hours) annually. We are maintaining and optimising the solar PV system through our bespoke monitoring solution, and full reactive and scheduled maintenance services.

The result

All vessels docking at the terminal can now be powered from a renewable energy source, reducing carbon emissions by 154.75 tonnes annually.

From the outset of the design phase, we have been committed to ensuring our new Horizon Cruise Terminal embraces sustainability principles. Working with Custom Solar we have been able to maximise the amount of solar generation installed on the roof space of the design such that the terminal will be a net generator of renewable energy.
