Forterra’s expertise lies in building products made from clay and concrete, and their portfolio contains some of the most recognised and respected names in the construction industry. Situated just two miles from the M1, the new Desford site in Leicestershire, UK, will offer a range of red and buff bricks designed to meet the demands of housebuilders.
Overview of the challenge
Forterra want to be a forward-thinking, responsible business, that operates in the most resource efficient ways, to minimise waste and help the UK to achieve its target of Net Zero Carbon by 2050.
To support their ambition, they set a challenge to make the Desford plant the largest and most efficient brick factory in Europe.
Our approach
Forterra reached out to Custom Solar in 2021 with goals to minimise the new plant’s environmental impact and ensure 25% less carbon dioxide emitted per brick, compared to their original works. To achieve this we constructed a 2.75Mwp system consisting of 6,789 (405W) panels and 20 inverters.
The generation from this system is 89% consumed on-site at their Desford plant.
The result
- 2,291.8 MWh electricity generated
- 436 tCO2 Emissions reduction
