Overview of the challenge
In the summer of 2019, Hampshire County Council declared a Climate Emergency and launched a Climate Change Strategy to tackle the challenges they were facing from changes to our climate. This strategy identified the three scopes of climate change priorities for the County Council and how they would prioritise and work towards addressing them.
Alongside this, two targets were set by the County Council:
- To be carbon neutral by 2050, in line with national government
- To build resilience to the impacts of a two-degree Celsius rise in temperature
To drive forward with energy efficiency and carbon reduction across the scope of two of the strategic priorities, Hampshire County Council bid for the Government Public Sector Decarbonisation Fund (PSDF).
Our approach
Custom Solar was chosen to deliver solar projects across 56 education sites including primary, high schools, and colleges within the Hampshire framework. The system sizes for these diverse sites ranged from 11.7 to 61.2 kWp with a combined 1.06 MWp collectively installed. With 2,373 solar panels across all sites there will be collective annual renewable energy generation of approximately 950,000 kWh which will reduce annual emissions across Hampshire by 235 tonnes.
This move to solar power generation has helped to reduced carbon emissions across the education real estate within Hampshire County Councils control.
The results
2,373 Solar Panels installed that have delivered:
- 5,501 MWh electricity generated
- 996 tCO2 Emissions reduction
- 1,068 kWp System Size
- 950,000 kWh Annual Energy Generation
- 235 Tonnes Annual Emissions Reduction
