Blackburn Meadows in Sheffield is a biomass-fuelled combined heat and power plant that became fully operational in 2015. It uses recycled waste wood sourced from within the UK to generate 30MW of electrical energy and up to 25MW of thermal energy, to power up to 69,000 homes and businesses in the South Yorkshire region. It also reduces carbon emissions by up to 65% when compared to natural gas.
Overview of the challenge
To further enhance their on-site sustainable credentials, this leading energy provider looked to power operations at their Blackburn Meadows plant with renewable energy from solar power, choosing Custom Solar to deliver the project.
Our approach
The 81.4 kWp solar system on site will generate an approximated 60,643 kWh of renewable energy, reducing carbon emissions by 16.8 tonnes each year. The solar project required 220 solar modules which were supplied by one of our trusted panel manufacturers Longi.
The result
- 81.4kWh electricity generated
- 16.8tCO2 Emissions reduction
The solar project has proven to be very successful. The solar module installation significantly improves site efficiency; via clean energy supplementing works power, which in turn, increases generation export capabilities and revenue.
Custom Solar were instrumental in the successful logistical, installation, and commissioning facets of the project. Site staff were impressed by the professional, timely and safe manner in which the project was delivered.
